SCHOOLCHILDREN who came up with ideas to revamp a play area have been exhibiting their work ahead of a planning meeting.

Plans to refurbish Green Park, in Darlington, will go before councillors on Wednesday, March 10.

Children from the neighbourhood as well as local schools, including St Augustine's RC Primary School, drew up their ideas during consultation.

The park, which borders Oakdene Avenue and Coniscliffe Road, has old play equipment, four swings and a spring rocker.

A friends group have spent two years coming up with £120,000 plans for the park, which also include new seating, refurbished paths and improved entrances.

Pupils at St Augustine's helped during the consultation by drawing plans with their own suggestions.

They have displayed their work in the town hall this week ahead of Wednesday's meeting.

Children met with councillor Cyndi Hughes, whose Park East ward borders Oakdene Avenue and where many of the supporters of the plans live.

Members of the student council will address the planning meeting.

Coun Hughes: "The children of St. Augustine's Primary School have spoken out, through their colourful and persuasive exhibition work, in support of the play equipment and other improvements at Green Park.

"They have also, over the past year, rolled up their sleeves and got involved in the planning of these environmental works. I am so very proud of their passion and commitment to this community project."

Opinion in the area is divided. Residents have submitted 65 letters of support because the plans are long overdue.

However, four letters of opposition have been written. Some residents feel the park should not be turned into an adventure playground and could attract underage drinking and anti-social behaviour.
