PRIMARY school pupils have warned cafes in Darlington to sell more fairtrade goods after completing a survey in the town.

The year three and four pupils from Middleton Tyas Primary School, near Scotch Corner, spent yesterday (MON) looking in shops and cafes to see how much fairtrade produce was available.

The study was a part of the school's fairtrade project, which is running alongside fairtrade fortnight, which runs until March 7.

Teacher Susan Gardner said: "Some of the larger, multinational chains, such as Starbucks and Oxfam were impressive, but the children were disappointed with the amount of fairtrade produce on offer at small coffee shops and tearooms.

"They are loving the project, we are also trying to link in our geography lessons and art work with the fairtrade theme."

The pupils will hold a fairtrade café for parents next Monday and Tuesday, between 3pm and 6pm at the school.
