Darlington residents will be encouraged to join the organ donor register at a town centre event tomorrow.

The NHS roadshow will come to town after carrying out a survey in the town, in which 41 per cent of residents said they thought they were already on the register. The actual figure is 25 per cent.

The NHS blood and transplant team will be at Joseph Pease Place, Darlington town centre, tomorrow, between 9am and 5pm.

Clare Fletcher, Northern donor transplant co-ordinator, urged people to come along to the event and sign up.

"This is your chance to make a real difference," she added. "The organ donor register saves the lives of people every day. More transplants were carried out last year than ever before, but the need for organs never stops."

Mark Watson, of Darlington, received a kidney transplant 15 years ago.

He said: "Receiving a kidney gave me back my quality of life.

"I'll always be grateful to my donor who gave me a second chance.

"I urge everyone in Darlington to come along and sign up to the organ donor register and make their wishes known."
