A STUDENT has revealed her star quality as she strives to become a make-up artist to the Hollywood A List.

Darlington College student Leander Somers was recently rewarded for her efforts after studying not just one course but two - and also holding down a full-time job.

The 19-year-old, of Darlington, works at Era 21 Plus, the salon of her mother Joanne. But on some afternoons and late into the evenings she also studies Level 3 hairdressing and beauty therapy.

"This means studying at Darlington College until 9pm some nights but it will be worth it if I achieve my dream," said Leander, who has been awarded The Vibe outstanding achievement in learning accolade.

Organised by Darlington Borough Council's youth service, the award was presented to her by Darlington College principal Tim Grant.

He said: "She has shown incredible resolve in taking two courses at once whilst also working in the salon. She is a brilliant role model for other students and with determination and aspirations like hers, I am sure she will succeed in what she has set out to achieve."

Leander has been interested in hair and beauty since she was a child when she took scissors to her Barbie dolls and helped out in the salon.

Her dream is to work as a TV or film make-up artist in the United States.

"I absolutely adore America and would love to work abroad," said Leander, who plans next to take a make-up diploma. "I really enjoy American TV dramas such a Glee and 90210 - and who knows, one day that might be my zip-code."
