MORE than 1,500 fans have rallied behind their club to ensure they survive the summer.

Officials at Darlington Football Club are urging more supporters to buy their tickets ahead of Sunday’s allstars fundraising game.

Outgoing manager Dave Penney organised the match after the club was placed in administration in February.

The club has enough money to fulfil this season’s fixtures, but the money from Sunday’s match will help to ensure the club’s 125th season is not its last.

Commercial director Christine Balford said: “If you are a fan, we want you to come and show your support on Sunday.

“That money will take us through the summer.

People are worried that the money is not going to the club, but it will.”

Most club funds every summer come from season ticket sales, but at the moment, the Quakers have had to put those on hold following the administration.

Steve Agnew is one of the former football stars who has pledged to play for the Quakers’ cause.

Agnew, who is part of Middlesbrough’s management team, has pedigree across the region after playing for Sunderland, York City and non-league Gateshead before he started his coaching career.

He said: “I think it’s terrible when teams are put in a situation like Darlington have been.

“They’ve got a lovely stadium and their season was going well.

They started the season with Dave Penney and Martin Gray doing a terrific job. They were right at the top of the league, and if it weren’t for the ten point deduction they’d still be in the play-offs and having a relatively successful season.”

Tickets are available from the club, The Northern Echo offices, or in the town centre on Saturday at £10 for adults, £5 for children.
