OLDER people in Darlington have revealed a new vision to promote health well-being for people aged over 50.

All Our Futures ... A Strategy for Later Life in Darlington, has been officially launched at the towns Dolphin Centre.

More than a third of people in Darlington are now aged more than 50 years old.

The vision includes issues regarding mobility, health and social care.

Darlington Partnership, Darlington Borough Council, Growing Older Living in Darlington (GOLD), Darlington Primary Care Trust and other statutory and community bodies, spent two years drawing up the action plan around older people.

Steve Rose, chief executive of Darlington Partnership, said: "This marks the beginning of a new era in Darlington where experience is valued and used for the benefit of everyone."

Councillor Brian Thistlethwaite, cabinet member for adult services, said: "People in Darlington are getting older and they have been instrumental in producing this invaluable document."

A market place of stalls covering a host of organisations working to improve life in the town filled Central Hall for the launch.

Visitors were also treated to a fitness display by members of GEM - Get Everyone Motivated.

A Talk Time session allowed people to talk to council officers, health service officials, police and Arriva North-East workers.

The new vision also focuses on key areas including carers, families and communities, housing, the environment, safety and life-long learning.

It analyses and presses for improvements in health and social care in the community, hospitals and homes.
