A SEASONAL fundraising Christmas tree has been erected in a Darlington shopping centre.

St Teresa's Hospice's Giving to Life Tree was put up in a new position on the lower level of the Cornmill Centre.

The appeal is giving shoppers the chance to create their own Christmas wishes for family and friends.

Throughout the Christmas period, shoppers will be able to hang personal messages on the 15ft tree, leaving special wishes in memory of a loved one or for their friends and family, in exchange for a small donation.

Members of Darlington Fire Service helped put up the tree and were among the first to add their personalised decorations and contribute to the festive fundraiser.

Hospice director Jane Bradshaw said: "The Giving to Life Tree offers people the unique opportunity to remember a loved one or write a Christmas message to friends and family.

"Thanks to the generosity of shoppers in Darlington, it also raises much-needed funds on the hospice's behalf."

Gavin Pallister, station manager for Darlington Fire Brigade, said: "The Darlington Fire Service has a long-standing relationship with St Teresa's Hospice and we try to help in its fundraising campaigns whenever we can.

"I know that all the lads are happy to support the hospice and we are wishing them the best of luck with this year's Giving to Life Tree."
