A DARLINGTON nursery has come up with the recipe for success after scooping a five-star award for its food hygiene.

Darlington College's childcare centre has become one of the first nurseries in the area to receive the Tees Valley Food Hygiene Award, given by Darlington Borough Council.

The award, part of the safer food, better business programme introduced by the Government, ensures healthy and hygienic food practices in premises which provide catering.

Jan Clark, childcare centre cook, said: "It's very reassuring for the children's parents to know that they are getting a good, healthy meal prepared to the highest standards.

"All our food is prepared freshly every day. I use vegetables and herbs that the children have grown in the nursery gardens - they love to help.

"The children's favourite meals at the moment are Moroccan lamb, gammon and roast potatoes and herb crust fish - we have a really good, varied and fresh menu."

The childcare centre prepares up to 35 meals a day, with 95 per cent of children staying for a hot lunch.

Annie Robinson, childcare centre co-ordinator, said: "It's a big achievement for Jan and the centre to receive this award.

"It is important to us as well as the parents that all our children are given a nutritious meal prepared in a clean, safe environment."
