Yesterday passengers were treated to today cupcakes, flags and t-shirts as they boarded flights to mark the landmark anniversary.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “KLM and Teesside Airport have a long-standing, successful partnership and I’m delighted to wish them a very happy 100th birthday.

“Thanks to KLM, local people and businesses can get worldwide from Teesside, with the award-winning Amsterdam Schiphol airport connecting us to more than 160 global destinations, multiple times a day."

Benedicte Duval, general manager for Air France – KLM UK & Ireland, thanked the airport for its support and said: “A company only reaches its 100th anniversary through two elements: loyal customers and great staff and what makes KLM so special is the authentic way in which we are able to combine the two."
