DARLINGTON is desperately in need of people willing to open their homes to children and teenagers.

A national shortage of foster carers means authorities across the country are struggling to find suitable placements for young people in need.

This week, Darlington Borough Council’s Fostering and Supported Lodging team appealed for help and urged anyone interested in becoming foster carers to come forward and help provide stability for children.

Team manager Jane Shade spoke out as part of the #OurDay initiative, which aims to give an insight into the work done by local authorities.

In a video plea for more foster carers, she said: “There is a national shortage of foster carers and supported lodgings carers.

“We are keen to hear from you if you have a spare room, it does not matter what your background is.

“We want to hear from all kinds of people who are interested in fostering and urge you to contact us for details.

“We provide information, training and support needed to become a foster carer or supported lodgings carer.

“Whether you feel like your inspiration or motivation is teenagers or you are more suited to supporting children and infants, please get in touch with us.”

The council hosts informal drop-in sessions on the first Monday of every month at the Central House Annexe on Gladstone Street, where people will be on hand to offer “myth-busting” advice and information about the fostering process.

The next one is due to take place on Monday, December 3 from 6pm until 7pm. Those unable to attend are invited to call 01325 406120 to speak to an advisor or request an information pack. Alternatively, they can email fostering@darlington.gov.uk.
