FORMER soldiers are honouring fallen comrades with a special run around a town centre park.

Fred Tennant and Gary Paxton both served their country and have decided to support others who choose a military career and devote their lives to protecting others.

The pair will complete four laps of Darlington's South Park, symbolising the four years of the First World War.

They will be running in aid of the SSAFA – a UK charity providing welfare and support to those serving in the Armed Forces and their families.

Mr Tennant, who relocated to Darlington following his service, found accommodation and was given debt advice through the charity.

He will be running alongside Mr Paxton on Sunday, November 11, who served 23 years with the Army before teaching young men and women in public services at North-Eat colleges to encourage them into a career in the military.

Mr Tennant said: “SSAFA helped me at a time in my life when I needed assistance and this is my way of raising money and saying thank you.

“This run means a lot to me and it’s my way of honouring the fallen in an wars and conflicts since that time 100 years ago.”

The run starts from the Clock Tower in Darlington’s South Park at 2pm.

Anyone wishing to join in can contact Mr Tennant by emailing fredtennant@hotmail.co.uk

Following the run, there will be refreshments served at the Quaker House in Mechanics Yard, donated by Katherine Plant from the Quakers Running Club.

Remembrance Sunday 2018 will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.
