RESIDENTS have raised concerns over the knock-on effect of ongoing roadworks on a busy commuter route.

Homeowners in the West End of Darlington have claimed damage has been caused to parked cars along narrow streets in the area as traffic is diverted away from the Carmel Road North roundabout.

A resident in Pierremont Crescent told The Northern Echo her car was damaged on Saturday by "impatient" drivers, with neighbours also having wing mirrors knocked off.

She added that neighbours had witnessed cars and HGVs mounting pavements and a motorbike had driven along the pavement itself.

The resident, who did not want to be named, said: "Drivers need to be aware of how dangerous it is to try and squeeze along these narrow roads.

"The main concern is that it's Halloween and children in dark costumes are going to be walking along the pavements in the dark. I just want anyone driving in the area to be mindful of that."

She added that neighbours in the area have also considered protesting over the roadworks.

A Thornbury Rise resident stated he has seen "two cars colliding", adding "it won't be the last".

A Darlington Borough Council spokesman said: “Essential maintenance work is being carried out at Carmel Road North roundabout and its approaches.

"This was planned during the half-term holiday, when traffic is generally lighter. Signs were put up to let motorists know the road is closed, as well as posts on the council’s website and social media pages.

“A diversion route is in place and we are monitoring the situation to try and ensure as many vehicles as possible, especially HGVs, are following the diversion.

“We are aware of safety concerns raised by residents and have responded to these individually. We hope to complete the works this coming weekend.”
