BUDDING young engineers of the future raced their own electric car around a motorsport track as part of a championship scheme.
Members of the Future Engineers scheme from Queen Elizabeth (QE) Sixth Form College in Darlington got the chance to build and race their creation as part of the Greenpower Education Trust's IET Formula 24 Championship.
The tournament, held in various locations around the UK, challenges groups of youngsters to build a single-seat electric car from scratch and race it for an hour around a motorsport circuit.
The winning car was the one which managed to travel the furthest distance around Croft Circuit.
The team from QE included Felix Clyde, Jenson Cockburn, Katy Feng, Ben Hacker, Laura Harvey, Angelina Hogarth and Bryany Maughan, although the last two were unable to make the event.
The car finished in sixth place, travelling 29.6mph at an average speed of 28.8mph.
Teacher Mike McTimoney, who accompanied the students to the heat, said: "The team worked extremely well together, solving problems with the car... during the action-packed ten hour day."
