A LOCAL hero is needed to serve as guest of honour during the opening of a new supermarket this month.

Marks and Spencer is appealing to the public to nominate a person who is known for their hard work and dedication to the community, whether it is "a neighbour who tirelessly raises funds for charity or a friend who started a coffee group for the elderly."

The winner will cut the ribbon at the official launch of the chain's West Park Darlington Foodhall, opening on Wednesday, August 22.They will also be given a tour of the shop and a £200 gift card.

Andrew Crooks, from M&S, said: “There is a brilliant sense of community in Darlington and we wanted to provide the opportunity to give something back to someone who continually improves the lives of others in the local area."
