A KARATE club has scooped a series of awards at a regional competition.

Last week, nine members of Hurworth Kyosho Karate Club attended the competition in Leeds, hosted by Steve Leak of Karate International.

The club managed to win 16 medals at the competition in both kata (the movements) and sparring.

They included:

*Amy Ireson, silver medal in sparring;

*Katie Mark, silver in sparring;

*James Reese, gold in kata, gold in team kata, gold in sparring;

*Michael Slater, gold in team kata, silver in sparring, bronze in kata;

*Mike Skingley, bronze in sparring;

*Denis Slater, gold in veterans' sparring, gold in veterans' kata;

*Colin Williams, silver in veterans' sparring, silver in veterans' kata;

*George Skingley, silver in sparring;

*Marcel Schubert, bronze in sparring, gold in team kata.

Chief Instructor Mr Slater said the competition was a first for some of the members.
