A MEMORIAL and thanksgiving service is taking place today to honour soldiers killed in Iraq.

The service at York Minster is in honour of soldiers from 19 Light Brigade, based at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, who died while on Operation Telic 9.

During their seven-month tour the brigade succeeded in handing over responsibility for security to the governor of Maysaan province and four bases to the 10th Division of the Iraqi Army.

But it came at great cost, with 26 killed in action and more than 130 wounded.

19 Light Brigade was replaced in Iraq by 1 Mechanised Brigade on June 1, 2007, having taken its lead from the successes of 20 Armoured Brigade.

Army chiefs will join relatives and other dignitaries for the service in the historic medieval cathedral.
