FIRE services are offering free smoke alarms to residents in the Darlington area.
Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service will also install the devices.
To apply for a smoke alarm, complete an online application form at www.ddfra.co.uk, or ring 0191-384-3381.
A spokesman for the Fire Service said: "Each year, over 500 deaths and 11,000 injuries occur in fires in the home across the UK - many of these deaths and injuries could be prevented if people had early warning and were able to get out in time.
"It is now possible to submit a request online for free installation of smoke alarms
"If you know of a household which does not have smoke alarms, suggest they have one fitted. With their permission, you can make request on their behalf."
