COLLEGE tutors working with next generation of health and physical education leaders have committed to support Darlington’s ambitions to promote healthy lifestyles.
The team at Darlington College’s sport, fitness and wellbeing department, are keen to encourage active teenagers to take up careers in the sector to ensure residents of all ages are keeping fit.
Seven tutors working at the college share an impressive six masters, a PhD and a degree among them, and hope to inspire others to meet a growing demand for outdoor leaders, sports and fitness instructors and therapists.
David John, who heads the college’s personal training section, said: “We are all part of Darlington’s healthy town initiative as the nation struggles with obesity levels approaching epidemic proportions.
“As well as targeting young people interested in staying active or pursuing careers in sport and exercise, there is a growing sector of the community aged 65 and over who are looking at exercise as a way of staying well.
“This can often require specially-trained staff who understand health conditions such as lower back pain and postnatal considerations.”
The department shares close links with Middlesbrough and Darlington Football Clubs, as well as the Martin Gray Football Academy.
