A PAIR of Swedish military jets were behind a window-rattling flyover on Thursday evening.

Homes across Darlington and its surrounding villages were shook by two Swedish Air Force JAS 39C Gripens as they took part in a Joint Warrior exercise in North-East airspace.

Residents reported hearing the engines of the fighter aircraft as they flew above the town at around 8.40pm.

A spokesman for Durham Tees Valley Airport confirmed that the jets did not land at the site and were in the area as part of a major bi-annual and multi-national exercise.

The majority of activity during this month’s Joint Warrior exercise will take place in and above the North Sea and includes submarines and mine warfare around Scotland.

Several aircrafts based at RAF Leeming, near Bedale, North Yorkshire have also been involved in the exercise.
