THE man who could be the next mayor of Darlington has thrown his weight behind an awards scheme for the town's rising sports stars.

The Darlington Sports Winners' Scheme aims to reward achievement and progress in sports at all levels, and is looking for nominations.

Ian Haszeldine, the deputy mayor and mayor-elect for next year, plans to dedicate his term as ceremonial head to the youth of Darlington.

"We really need to recognise the achievement of our young people," said Councillor Haszeldine, the ward member for Lingfield.

"The level of talent we have in the town is amazing. We have excellent football and cricket players, but also great performers in lesser known sports like badminton and tae kwon do.

"We are used to criticising young people for anti-social behaviour and so on, but we really should be cheering them on when they achieve success.

"We need to reward all the good work done by our young people, as well as their parents and all our many volunteers."

The scheme is supported by The Northern Echo, Serco, Master Skills Sporting Academy and Darlington District and Youth Association.

The categories in this year's programme include young sports achiever, team award, services to sport.

The competition is open to youngsters aged eight to 18 years.

Three presentations will be held this year at the Dolphin Centre, with a grand final on Wednesday, December 5.

Closing dates for nominations and presentation dates are as follows: netball, basketball, table tennis, boxing, rugby, orienteering and gymnastics: Friday, June 29. Presentation: Wednesday, July 18.

Cricket, athletics, tennis, golf, cycling and diving: Friday, September 28. Presentation: Wednesday, October 17.
