A VETERAN cyclist and fundraiser is saddling up for a marathon bike ride in memory of his wife.

Brian Everett will tackle an 1,120-mile journey to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. His wife, Sheila, died from breast cancer three years ago.

Mr Everett, non-executive director of Darlington Primary Care Trust, will spend 17 days in the saddle.

The 72-year-old will set off from Darlington on Friday, June 22, heading for John O'Groats via the Highlands.

He will make his way back to Darlington along the east coast.

Mr Everett said: "I started raising money for charities many years ago, but when I moved up to Darlington, I concentrated on local charities and supporting young gymnasts through the Darlington Gymnastic Club.

"In recent years, I've completed a series of challenges for various charities. Last year, I did a 180-mile trek across the High Atlas Mountains, in North Africa, followed later in the year by a 350-mile cycle ride down the east coast to Norfolk.

"I've walked the Coast to Coast route, the Scottish Highlands, The Pennines and in the Himalayas, as well as a number of marathons, including Berlin, London three times, Paris, Brussels and Rotterdam. In all, I've probably raised about £40,000.

"However, this year I wanted to do something a little more demanding before the limitations of old age kick in."

Mr Everett, from Darlington, said he was trying to get as much support as possible.

"I've already had pledges of support from around the country, from friends and organisations, which I hope will keep my wheels moving and help raise a good amount for the charity," he added.
