COMMUNITY-spirited residents have been recognised for their contribution to the environment.
A ceremony was held to present 18 people with environment awards from Heighington Parish Litter Group in honour of the work they have done to protect and improve the parish's environment over the past year.
Judges chose winners for their contribution in litter picking and maintaining the parish's public gardens and flower tubs.
The top award went to Brian Anderson, named the person who made the "most outstanding contribution" over the past year. He was presented with the McLean Silver Bowl by group secretary Kit Bartram.
The parish includes Heighington village, crowned Britain's perfect village in a BBC documentary last year. The awards took place following the group's annual meeting last month.
* The group's next litter pick takes place on Saturday. Volunteers are asked to meet at Redworth Village Hall, opposite the Chestnuts in School Aycliffe, or Heighington Village Hall from 10am. Equipment is provided.
