STUDENTS from Darlington College have been put through their paces Army-style to test their stamina and leadership skills.
Abseiling, assault courses, rock climbing, route marches, orienteering and a pitch-black maze were among some of the tests endured by young people on the National Certificate Public Services course.
The four-day challenge took place at Stainton Camp, near Barnard Castle, as well as Catterick Garrison and an Army battle camp in the Yorkshire Dales.
Tutor Helen Cook said: "It was Army-based but the skills they have learned will prepare them for any leadership or management role because it takes them out of their comfort zone. It was great to see how the students transformed to meet the new challenges."
Student Jess Hudson, 18, of Darlington, said: "It was the first time I had attempted abseiling and it was really scary as I thought I was going to get stuck. The maze was pitch black and we had to feel around to get through it. But we worked as a team and it was fine."
