AN elderly man injured in a rush hour car crash on Friday is in a critical condition.

The man is believed to be 77-year-old Robert Beevers, a former personnel manager at The Northern Echo, who lives in Elton Road, Darlington.

Mr Beevers was airlifted to The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance after suffering head and neck injuries in the crash in Darlington.

A spokesman for the police said the collision happened as Mr Beevers was on his way home from Swan House Farm at about 3.50pm on Friday.

Police say as it pulled across the carriageway, the Kia Magentis Mr Beevers was travelling in was struck from the side by a Mercedes heading out of Darlington.

The road was closed for more than four hours following the collision, in which Mr Beevers' dog died. A spokesman last night described Mr Beevers' condition as "critical but stable".

A Sedgefield man and his two young children travelling in the Mercedes were taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital, but later released with minor injuries.
