A PETITION is being prepared by residents of a Darlington street who believe an accident is imminent because of poor road markings.

Residents of The Broadway, off Yarm Road, in Eastbourne, have complained to ward councillor Ian Haszeldine that the absence of road markings at the busy junction with Yarm Road is a danger to road users.

The road has become clogged with parked cars right up to the junction and minor accidents have become commonplace.

The matter is compounded by extra traffic using The Broadway for access to Heathfield Primary School and as a shortcut for the industrial estates in Lingfield.

Some residents are preparing a petition to improve the safety of the road, a move supported by Coun Haszeldine.

Coun Haszeldine said: "There is now a real concern from residents that, because of levels of activity on this road at school start and finish times, accidents are a real threat, especially when in conjunction with peak time traffic."

Residents are calling for the road to be made a 20mph zone, and for extra markings to keep the junction free from parked cars.

Bollards will be installed over the next month to prevent vehicles parking on grass verges, and parents of the schoolchildren have been asked to consider the residents of the street when on the school run.
