DARLINGTON expect to extend the loan of Middlesbrough defender David Wheater today.

However, the 20-year-old will not be staying beyond the March 31 game at Barnet because his maximum 93-day emergency loan period expires on April 4.

Six games remains after that and possibly the play-offs. The loss of the 6ft 5ins defender at such a crucial stage of the season will be a major blow to Quakers boss Dave Penney, who has guided his side to within touching distance of the top-seven.

"Nothing has been agreed with Middlesbrough and we will find out on Friday," confirmed Penney.

"The only sticking point would be if Middlesbrough wanted to send him out to a club in a higher division.

"He wants to stay and he's playing games here so we're hopeful.

"The maximum we can have him is 93 days, but then we have no choice, he has to go back, which is disappointing."

Wheater last night told Penney he wants to remain at the club, but the final decision will rest with Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate.

"I've just agreed to another month, but that's all I can sign unfortunately," said Wheater.

"I've made it clear to the gaffer that I want to stay, but it looks as though I will be going back to Middlesbrough after the Barnet game."

However, Wheater has made no secret of his desire to return to Darlington next season after a hugely successful loan spell.

"I have really enjoyed my time here and I wouldn't rule out coming back next season," said Wheater. "Obviously, that will rest with Middlesbrough, but I would be happy to come back on loan for the season.

Meanwhile, Tim Ryan is back in training after a recovering from a hamstring problem. However, the defender will not be considered tomorrow.
