PRIMARY school pupils from Darlington helped bury a time capsule under the Pedestrian Heart works yesterday.
The capsule will not be opened for at least 100 years.
Letters and pictures will show the children of the 22nd Century what life was like in 2007.
The capsule was buried close to where the water cascade, designed by Michael Pinsky, will be installed. An engraved granite paving stone will mark the spot.
Councillor David Lyonette, Darlington Borough Council's Cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: "We think it's important that young people - the future of this town - have the chance to play an integral part in the Pedestrian Heart scheme, and I am pleased to say that the response from schools to this project was overwhelming.
"I am delighted so many children from across the borough wanted to take part. It's exciting to think that some of their descendants might be the ones to dig this time capsule up many years from now."
