COUNCILLORS have applauded the decision to install CCTV cameras in an area of Darlington plagued by anti-social behaviour.

The move comes after a three-year struggle against anti-social behaviour and criminal damage to cars and property in the area.

Darlington Borough Council will install the cameras over the next six months at the entrance to South Park, in Victoria Embankment.

A council spokesman said: "We hope this latest addition to our extensive CCTV system will be in place within six months following extensive consultation with residents and ward members."

Local ward councillor Cyndi Hughes said: "We are delighted that the long wait is soon to be over.

"The cameras should deter the anti-social behaviour taking place and help us to identify the perpetrators should future incidents take place."

In addition to the cameras, ward councillors have been working closely with police community support officer (PCSO) Dawn Dalby to crack down on incidences of crime.

Residents have been consulted about problems and potential solutions at regular ward surgeries and PCSO Dalby has continued to patrol the area.

Coun Hughes added: "Residents have been patient. For this we are most grateful. We believe the CCTV cameras will make a positive difference to that area of the park.
