A DARLINGTON woman has celebrated her 100th birthday with a outdoor beach party organised by care home staff.

Hilda Woodhead, known by her middle name Lorraine, is said by staff at Eden Cottage care home, in Cobden Street, to be 'always on the go' and a social butterfly with lots of friends.

Mrs Woodhead, who was married to her late husband, Godfrey, for more than 50 years, marked her centenary with a visit from Darlington mayor Gerald Lee and a special tea party on the decking outside the care home.

As well as working as personal secretary to Lord Ropner, Miss Woodhead was also an accomplished golfer in her younger days, spending many hours on the greens and fairways at Dinsdale Golf Club.

Jo Wedge, deputy manager at Eden Cottage, said: "She had a lovely time at our beach party for her birthday, although she is exhausted now. She has lived here for about four years now and she never stops, she's very social and loves playing bridge."
