WATERING cans and digging equipment was given away to youngsters entering a village show, in an effort to encourage the next generation of gardeners.
The annual Middleton St George allotments and gardens show took place at the village cricket club on Saturday (August 17).
A best scarecrow competition was also part of the show, along with the traditional flower and vegetable classes.
Organiser Maz Holmes said the event had been well attended, with decent weather and more than £200 was raised towards next year’s show.
The show is sponsored by Low Dinsdale and Middleton St George parish councils, among others.
Children’s classes included funniest shaped vegetable, best painted or decorated egg and best potato man.
There was also cookery and photography competitions.
