YOUNGSTERS in Darlington have for the first time been handed the chance to decide how they want money on youth facilities in the town to be spent.

A Government-funded pot, handled by Darlington Borough Council, has been rebranded and is to hand out £310,000 for youth projects.

The money, which has been named The Dosh, is the council's youth opportunity fund and youth capital fund.

It will fund different projects over the next two years.

Young people and youth organisations who want to set up their own projects or schemes to benefit themselves or others are being invited to apply for the money.

It has been designed to give youngsters the chance to ask for facilities and activities they want in their neighbourhoods.

It is the first time youngsters will be given a role in spending money in the borough.

Larger bids will be put before a youth board, which will be made up of young people who will receive training so they can process the applications.

The council's youth services team is also hoping to recruit adults in communities across Darlington to help turn ideas into reality.

Councillor Chris McEwan, cabinet member for children's services, said: "The Dosh is a great way to involve young people in making decisions about their own lives.

"As well as coming up with ideas for new activities, they must bid for the money and then ensure it is spent in the best way to benefit them and others.

"By giving young people the power to decide which projects receive funding, The Dosh will ensure the right kind of activities are provided for young people and will also give adults a chance to work closely with young people from all backgrounds who want to make a difference."

The proposals to set up the fund will go before the council's cabinet next week.

If they are approved, information will be released about how young people can submit their ideas for new activities.
