POLICE are warning dog owners to be vigilant after sausages laced with steel nails were found in South Park.
A dog walker found the six sausages on Saturday and disposed of them safely before reporting the incident to a PCSO.
Police contacted local vet surgeries to establish whether there had been any incidents of animals suffering mouth or abdominal injuries possibly caused by ingesting nails, but it appears that the sausages found were an isolated incident.
A police spokesman said: “Please be aware if you come across something similar as this endangers both domestic pets and wildlife.”
Anybody with information about the sausages or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in South Park on Saturday should contact Durham Police on 101.
