A NEW cafe celebrating the history of a Darlington market has opened its doors.

The Waterhouse Kitchen, in the Covered Market, is named after the market’s designer, architect Alfred Waterhouse, and is inviting customers to enjoy a coffee and learn about the landmark’s past.

Cafe owners, Peter and Suzanna Bulmer, who also own Coopers Tea Rooms and Coffee House in Post House Wynd, South Park, and the Head of Steam museum, wanted to celebrate the history of the building and have decorated the walls with Mr Waterhouse’s sketches and cuttings documenting the market’s history.

Mr Waterhouse, who began designing the market in 1861, is regarded as the greatest Gothic architect of his generation.

He also designed Rockliffe Hall, in Hurworth, as well as the Natural History Museum, in London, and Manchester Town Hall.

Mr Bulmer said: “We wanted to provide somewhere different to Coopers with a more contemporary menu but celebrate the Covered Market as well, as it is the most iconic building in Darlington and is right in the middle of the town.

"We only use local produce in our food, and much of it comes from the traders in the Covered Market."

The Waterhouse Kitchen is in the Covered Market, opposite Guniot beauty salon, and is open from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday.
