A GROUP of students who perform in a sign language choir to raise money for charity have been honoured for their efforts.

The ten girls from the ‘Signing Stars’ choir at Hummersknott Academy, in Darlington, were presented with a Diana Award for their work with the choir, which performs at St Teresa’s Hospice and nursing homes while raising money for a number of charities.

While at school, the choir helps also to raise money for students with special needs and members teach other students how to sign.

Award-winners Laura Bennet, Hanna Hopps, Frances Ashdown, Zoe Austen, Hope Harvey, Lily Carlton, Chelsea Brown, Charlotte McFarlane, Jodie Fyfe, and Elaine White were presented with the award by St Teresa’s Hospice Director, Jane Bradshaw, in honour of their work with the charity.

The awards were launched in 1999, in memory of the late Princess, and are given to young people who help tackle bullying, raise money for charity and volunteer.

Members of the choir were also recently presented with a Shrievalty Award from the outgoing High Sheriff of County Durham, the Honorable Harry Vane, at a ceremony at Durham Castle.
