AN elderly woman is said to be shaken but unharmed after a thief snatched her handbag while she was walking down a residential street.

The 74-year-old woman was in Hill Garth, next to Holy Family RC Church, in Cockerton, Darlington, at 12.15pm today (Sunday, April 1) when a man approached her from behind and took her handbag.

The strap of the woman’s black leather handbag, which had a patchwork decoration on the front, was broken in the struggle. It contained a mobile phone, debit and credit cards as well as a number of family photographs.

The man has been described as about 6ft tall, of medium build and wearing a black hooded top, blue jeans and white trainers. He made off in the direction of Cockerton Green.

The woman screamed for help and ran into the road, where she was helped by passers-by.

PC Paul Dickenson (CORR) of Darlington Police described the incident as “horrible for the victim” and appealed for witnesses or anyone has seen the handbag to contact him on the non-emergency 101 number.
