A DARLINGTON school has recruited a new staff member to help students get the most out of their work experience placements.
Hummersknott Academy, in Darlington, has taken on Julie Bushby as a work experience coordinator, who will work with year 10 pupils to ensure they all have successful placements.
Students at the academy are encouraged to select employers themselves and contact them directly to arrange placements, to help improve their independence and confidence.
Mrs Bushby will then carry out health and safety checks and provide support to the employers taking part in the work experience scheme, which aims to build partnerships between the school and local businesses in the area.
She said: “We feel it is an extremely important exercise and one which will allow students the chance to experience the world of work by giving them a flavour of employment and showing them how the work place and the skills they learn at school are linked together.”
Principal Pat Howarth said: “Julie’s appointment will enable the academy to develop and strengthen links with employers and ensure our students continue to leave Hummersknott fully prepared for their future careers.”
Any employers who would like to be part of the academy’s work experience programme can contact Mrs Bushby on 01325-241191 or email abs@hummersknott.org.uk
