A CLUB that provides social activities and support for blind and partially-sighted people has been awarded £200 by supermarket shoppers.

Darlington Social Club for the Blind, based in Corporation Road, has thanked people who voted for the club to receive a grant from the Asda Foundation, which supports worthy causes in the area local to its supermarkets.

The club will use the £200 grant to help continue its minibus service twice a month, which picks up club members for games night, before returning them home safely.

Club chairman Wendy Glasper said: “We lost our funding from the council to run the minibus and the Rotary Club of Darlington stepped up with some funding to help us continue it.

“This donation from the Asda Foundation means that we will be able to keep going for another six months.

"It may not seem a lot, a games night twice a month, but for our members going out after dark is a big deal and it means a great deal to have social opportunities.

“It’s really good to know that people voted for us. It’s a really worthy cause to help blind and partially-sighted people and we need all the support we can get.”

The cheque for £200 was handed over to the club by Asda community life champion Louise Gibson.
