GANGS of youths who throw fireworks are being targeted as part of a major crackdown.
Police and council officials in Hambleton district say they will be taking a no-nonsense approach to troublemakers in the run-up to Bonfire Night.
It aims to catch nuisance groups - and to reduce the number of serious burn injuries caused each year.
Shops are being reminded that it is an offence to sell fireworks to people under 18.
The police will use stop and search powers to check youths for fireworks to combat the problem.
Also, anyone caught throwing fireworks, or setting them off late at night, will get an £80 fixed penalty ticket.
"Once again, we hope these powers will ensure that there are few - if any - cases of anti-social behaviour caused by fireworks," said Chris Fields, Hambleton Community Safety Partnership manager.
"But we need the public to help us - to let us know of any problems, especially in the villages."
To report possible underage sales of fireworks call trading standards on 0845-330-3313.
To report incidents of youths causing problems with fireworks, contact the police.
