THREE teenagers have been arrested by detectives investigating a so-called happy slapping assault.

The 27-year-old victim was attacked by a group of youths on the night of October 6 in an area between Penhill Close and Bradley Close, on the Urpeth estate, Chester-le-Street.

He suffered serious facial injuries in the beating and needed hospital treatment. He is now recovering at home.

The victim recalls one of his attackers pointing a mobile phone at him while the assault took place, suggesting the incident was filmed or photographed.

The trio were all arrested last week on suspicion of assault, interviewed and then released on police bail until the middle of next month, pending further inquiries.

Police believe a number of witnesses may have seen the attack, but may be too frightened to come forward.

Detective Constable Steven Frost, from Chester-le-Street CID, said: "I can understand people's concerns in coming forward, but would reassure them there are a number of positive steps we can take to help.

"If they are prepared to contact us, we can discuss what might be possible. Any information they can give would potentially be very useful, and would enable us to see those responsible appear in court."

Anyone who has information can contact Chester-le-Street CID through the force's non-emergency number, 0845-60-60-365.

Callers can also ring Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800-555111.
