SCHOOLBOY Mikey Fullerton's Halloween lantern promises to be something special this year.

The 11-year-old has grown a pumpkin as big as himself on his father's County Durham allotment.

Mikey, who grew it from seed ordered from America, was determined to beat his ten stones effort of last year.

The pumpkin, which weighs 407lbs, nearly 30 stones, is so heavy that five men cannot pick it up. It will have to be hollowed out to get it over the gate of the allotments in Moorside, near Consett.

Moorside Comprehensive pupil Mikey, who has been growing pumpkins since he was three years old, regularly helps his 39-year-old father, Peter, a tractor driver, on the family allotment.

Mikey, who lives at the family home in Surrey Crescent, Moorside, said: "It's important kids know where their food comes from and everybody should eat more fresh veg."

The biggest Halloween lantern, grown in the US, was nearly 105 stones
