A GOLF-PLAYING doctor swung into action to raise funds for healthcare.

Dr Udhaya Kumar decided Dinsdale Spa Golf Club should support the head and neck charity at Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital, where he works, during his year as captain

Events including charity weekend golf, race nights and raffles have raised £5,226 to help patients with head, neck and mouth cancers.

It is the largest amount raised by the club for charity in a single year.

Dr Kumar said: "The club is proud to support local charities and this one was close to my heart as, sadly, a member of the golf club died from head and neck cancer. I'm delighted so much money was raised and this was done with the considerable help from the gentlemen and lady members."

Almost 7,500 people will be diagnosed with head and neck cancer in the UK this year, with the Teesside area being one of the worst-hit areas.

Head and neck surgeon Richard Wight said: "Sadly for many, they present very late to their GP, having been aware of symptoms for a considerable length of time. This makes treatment more difficult.

"Our aim is to encourage people to seek help earlier as well as working to encourage people to quit smoking."

The funds will buy equipment for the head and neck team.
