A MOTHER and her partiallysighted son are taking part in the Race for Life to raise funds to help tackle cancer, which claimed the life of a relative.

Carol Scott, of Spennymoor, County Durham, and her son, Jack, ten, are taking part in the Race for Life event at St Leonard’s Catholic School, Durham City, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

They will run in memory of Flo Scott, Ms Scott’s mother, who died from cancer 22 years ago.

Ms Scott, of Flora Street, said: “I wanted to do something to raise funds in memory of my mam, and Jack knows all about her.

“He wanted to do another charity event with me, but couldn’t. Then I found out that children up to 12 could do the Race for Life.

“I’m really chuffed to bits that he wants to do something like this and I’m really proud of him.”

She added: “Jack has had a few changes himself this year and recently he moved schools, but he’s not letting anything stop him.

“We’re very excited about the race and we’ve been out and about trying to get ourselves fit for the challenge.”

Jack, who is a pupil at Middlestone Moor Primary School, Spennymoor, has a hereditary problem which has affected his sight.

The mother and son team have raised money for Cancer Research UK in the past, including organising a homemade cake sale.

Ms Scott’s mother ran Coxhoe Workingmen’s Club with her husband, John, until she died.

Ms Scott said: “It’s nice to fundraise for the cancer charity.

“When my mam was ill people were told to just go home as there was not a lot they could do.

“They have made so much progress against the illness and, if we keep putting money into the fight, then one day they may find a cure.”

Ms Scott and Jack will join thousands of other people for the 5km Race for Life on July 15.
