POLICE are appealing for information after a spate of stone throwing incidents on a footbridge which crosses a busy road.

The bridge which crosses over the road at Sunny Terrace in Stanley, Cuonty Durham and forms part of the coast-to-coast cycle track is being used by youths to throw rocks and missiles at vehicles as they pass under it.

Since November last year there have been ten reports to police where damage has been caused to a vehicle, with three incidents occurring last Wednesday.

PCSO Steven Atherton from the Neighbour Policing Team said: "We are appealing for anyone with information as to who may be responsible to come forward as these incidents are potentially life-threatening."

Witnesses to last week’s incidents told police they saw three boys who were around 13-years-old on the bridge throwing rocks at around 7.30pm.

One of the youths was described as wearing a bright blue hooded top.

Stanley neighbourhood policing team is working closely with members of the public to tackle the problem.

Extra patrols are being carried out around the footbridge to tackle this problem.

PCSO Atherton said: "It is important that we find out who is responsible to prevent serious incident occurring and we are appealing to our communities to assist us."

Anyone with any information should contact Durham Constabulary on 101.
