A ROOFING contractor who stole treasured jewellery from a family after being allowed to use their garage while they were away was branded despicable by a judge.

Keith Skinner not only took the sentimental belongings, but also told associates his customers were on holiday – and they burgled the house in Darlington days later.

The 31-year-old tradesman was jailed for three years after he admitted theft, and his three friends received sentences ranging from three years and eight months to five years.

Last night, the gang’s devastated victims told how they feel betrayed after placing their trust in Skinner, of Sanderson Street, Darlington.

Following a series of family bereavements and helping to nurse their son back to health after an accident, the couple went on holiday to Cyprus – partly urged to go by Skinner.

When they returned and found the devastation, the brazen roofer even came to see them, and told the couple how sorry he was to hear their home had been broken into.

Among the items taken were a nurse’s silver buckle – bought by the woman’s late father when she qualified – and badges with her name inscribed on the back.

Colin Hughes, 30, of Roseberry Street, Darlington, was jailed for four years after he admitted his part in the burglary in the early hours of June 24 and supplying Class A drugs on July 1.

David Webb, 28, of Grange Road, Darlington, received a sentence of three years and eight months. He pleaded guilty to the burglary and a charge of having a bladed article.

Lee Bamber, 26, of Station Road, Darlington, was jailed for five years after he admitted burglary, supplying Class A drugs, possessing Class A drugs and attempted theft.

Judge Andrew Kershaw said all four were habitual offenders who were selfish and had committed the crimes for their own gain.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the couple left Skinner with access to their garage so he could use it to store equipment and make tea while he worked there.

The retired nurse told The Northern Echo: “We have worked hard for every single thing we have, and to have it taken was heartbreaking. This has had a terrible impact on us.”
