POLICE have praised a vigilant member of the public after a man was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

They received a call just after 11pm on Monday from a member of the public who had noticed a suspicious vehicle and its occupant in Danesgate in York. Officers went to the scene and found that the car, a black Audi A3, had been stolen in Northallerton earlier that day during a burglary. Other items including a lap-top, Ipod and camera were also taken in the raid.

The car's occupant, a 22-year-old man of no fixed address, was arrested by police on suspicion of burglary and car theft. He was taken into custody for questioning where he currently remains.

Detective Chief Inspector Heather Pearson said: "This is a great example of how information from the public helps the police. A simple hunch that something was not quite right has led to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of a stolen vehicle."

She added: "The public act as the eyes and ears of the police and their help is instrumental in helping us to prevent and detect crime, as this case demonstrates."
