Anyone living in the Lake District or North York Moors will now be eligible to sit on the National Parks Authority, the Government said today.
As part of a shake-up aimed at allowing residents more of a say when it comes to running the parks, ministers want local people to take up what were previously seats reserved for parish councillors.
There will also be pilot schemes lasting four years in the New Forest and Peak District National Parks.
Those seeking to represent their community on the authority will take part in local elections under the plans.
Environment Minister Richard Benyon said: ''The changes we are making will give the local communities a greater say in how their national park is managed.''
The changes are expected to come into effect from April 2013, following consultation and pending legislative approval.
