A GROUP of 11 cavers were trapped underground in the Yorkshire Dales for five hours due to rising water levels yesterday (WEDS).

Eight teenagers and three adults became stuck in Lower Long Churn cave, near Selside in the Ingleton area just before 1pm.

They had to remain in the cave until about 6pm when the water levels dropped off sufficiently for members of the Cave Rescue Organisation to enter and bring them to safety.

Precautionary medical checks were carried out by paramedics and all those involved were declared fit and well.

North Yorkshire Police and officials from North Yorkshire County Council attended, and set up a respite centre at Settle College, where concerned family members gathered as they waited for the water levels to reduce before the rescue effort could be carried out. The group were from the Oldham area.
