A MOTORIST was killed and another seriously injured in a road collision in which one car ended up on its roof.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to help the piece together the circumstances of the accident, which happened just after 2.30pm on Sunday.

It involved a red Alfa Romeo Spider and a silver 3-Series BMW and took place on the A61 between North Rigton and Harrogate.

At the time of the incident the BMW was heading towards Harrogate and as a result of the incident collided with a tree, the Alfa Romeo was travelling in the opposite direction and came to rest upside down.

The 30-year-old man from Leeds driving the Alfa Romeo was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The 77-year-old woman driving the BMW received serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. She was taken to Harrogate District Hospital where she is in a stable condition.

Traffic Constable Rick Harper said: "I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the manner of driving of either vehicle prior to the incident to contact the police as a matter of urgency."
