Shildon middle-distance runner Cameron Boyek and Durham City hurdler Sophie Wood have been called up for their Great Britain debuts in the European Under-20 in Tallinn, Estonia, next week.

Boyek, 17, has been rewarded for two eye-catching displays, finishing third in the Aviva Under-20 Championships 1500m in a personal-best 3 mins 47.46 secs and then taking the silver medal in the English Schools Championships at Gateshead last weekend.

Wood, a 19-year-old Leeds Metropolitan University student, is selected after finishing third at Bedford in the 400m hurdles in a time of 60.20 secs following a personal-best 59.85 secs in the British Universities Championships in May.

The Durham County duo join three other North-East athletes who have received European Championships call-ups - 21-year-old Teeside sprinter Richard Kilty and Gateshead Harriers clubmates Niall Flannery (400m hurdles) and England 800m champion Stacey Smith, who will be competing in the Under-23 Championships in the Czech Republic.

Kilty, a disappointing third in the Aviva Championships 200m, has been called up only as a relay competitor, despite running a lifetime best and World and Olympic qualifying time of 20.53 secs after paying his own way to a meeting in Switzerland last weekend, taking him to the top of the UK under-23 rankings.

Kilty, who also ran a personal-best 100m time of 10.39 secs in Switzerland, said: "It will be a huge disappointment not to be added to the team for an individual place in Ostrava despite having already been named in the relay squad.
