HIKERS are being encouraged to pull on their boots and take part in the region’s most popular walking event.

The Diabetes UK Great North Walk, which raises money for the charity, caters for walkers of all ages and levels of fitness.

The ten-mile hike, and the two-and-a-half-mile “Friendly Little Loop”, take in beautiful countryside in and around the North York Moors.

After last year’s success at the new venue at Guisborough Forest and Walkway Centre, the organisers are hoping for a repeat performance.

David Hart, communications director for organiser Nova International, said: “Following the success of last year’s Diabetes UK Great North Walk, we are delighted to be returning to Guisborough. The reaction from people who took part last year was really positive and we hope even more people take part this year in what is a challenging, but enjoyable, walk in a lovely location.”

The official launch of the event took place at the centre yesterday when Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Jo Jackson turned out to show her support.

The champion race walker, from nearby Marske, is encouraging people to give one of the routes a go.

She said: “I’m looking forward to having a nice relaxing walk for a change and would love to see as many people as possible taking part.”

The ten-mile route will start and finish at Guisborough Forest and Walkway Visitor Centre at Pinchinthorpe.

The spectacular route takes a number stunning locations including Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook’s Monument.

While the wheelsfriendly little loop, with some small hills and slightly rough ground, is for those with pushchairs, wheelchairs or simply legs that cannot manage the longer walk.

Councillor Sheelagh Clarke, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s executive member for culture, leisure, tourism and rural affairs, is tackling the longer trek this year.

She said: “I thought it was a tremendous event last year. Hopefully, the sun will shine and it will be a great event again.

“This time I intend to take part in the ten-mile walk with my family, so that will be a challenge.”

Entry into the event includes a limited edition event T-shirt – which can be worn on the day – souvenir medal and finisher’s pack. There is ample free parking at the forest and walkway visitor centre, which is situated just off the A173.

The event takes place on Sunday, July 10, with the first walkers setting off at 10.30am. Entry costs £10 for the main walk or £5 for the little loop.
